The Road to UNBOUND - Office Hours - The Decision Engine and the Scaffolding Nobody Took Down

Office Hours is the informal half of The Road to UNBOUND. No script, no segments, and no expectation that anyone stays the whole hour.

This one runs early, and the guests are Hannah Fisher and Chris Grant of BabelQuest, joining from the UK over lunch. They co-present The Decision Engine: How to Build a CRM That Drives Action at UNBOUND on Wednesday, 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM Eastern. Hannah named the session, and Chris says the name is what got him to join her on it.

It opens with everyone rating themselves out of ten on excitement, fear and preparedness, which is how a conversation about a conference talk turns into a conversation about never feeling ready. George B. Thomas's answer: he feels prepared enough on the flight home, and if you ever get to a four out of ten you are crushing it.

The session talk then goes somewhere more useful than a preview. The premise is reverse engineering: people ask for a red button, or a dashboard, or six more reports, and the work is to keep asking why until you reach the decision underneath. George's amendment is that five whys is not enough and the magic sits at the bottom of the seventh. The example everyone in the room recognises is the report that took hours to build and that nobody has opened since.

Out of that comes the metaphor the episode is named for. Scaffolding is what you put up to build something, and a HubSpot portal is full of it left standing: abandoned workflows, properties that meant something once, routes to nowhere. The scaffolding is necessary and it is proof that work is happening. It is also the thing you are supposed to take down, so people stop mistaking it for the building.
